Concurrent Session II: Mending Morale

Speaker: Joel McDonald, Communication Specialist, City of Lethbridge

Session Description: Enhancing employee morale is integral in the pursuit of organizational stress. This engaging multi-media presentation defines and offers a deep understanding of the important benefits to increased morale, examples of how low morale manifests itself in the workplace, as well as current research on the topic. The presentation also offers insight and current knowledge that will allow managers, supervisors and frontline staff to learn to identify and rectify the root causes of low morale in the workplace. The Public Safety Communications profession is a busy and stressful profession. We must ensure that employees, the public, and our patients are always receiving the best possible service and care.

Speaker Bio: Joel McDonald currently works for the City of Lethbridge as a Communications Specialist. His current role as 9-1-1 and Emergency call taker/dispatch for Police, Fire and Ambulance. He has been a trainer, mentor to new employees, and active member of the Health and Safety Committee. Joel is currently a Licensed Paramedic with the Alberta College of Paramedics and is employed part time with Alberta Health Services. Joel was recently honoured with the 2009 Communciations Specialist of the Year for his center, which he received as nominated by his peers. Being a professional in Public Safety Communications as well as working on a Ground Ambulance has provided Joel with unique perpective & insight which constantly allows him to learn, teach, and adapt to our ever changing profession.
